Internet TV Review

Internet TV Review

Hey, Kevin here. Thank you for visiting my website, WindowsPCTV.org.  You’re reading my uncensored review of what I really thought about SatelliteDirect’s Internet TV software download.  Note that this a review though, if you’re looking for SatelliteDirect’s website then click here.

Why am I writing this? I heard that if I got Internet TV (Windows PCTV) I could stop paying $71 per month for my cable TV bill (free TV), plus I heard I could get 3,500 channels through Internet TV (from the U.S. and 98 other countries), and watch TV on my laptop wherever I have an Internet connection… without having to install a TV tuner card into my computer.  I chose SatelliteDirect’s software program (works on Mac or PC computers) because it has a 100% money back guarantee.  I wanted to find a review of the television download first before buying it but I couldn’t find an honest review.  So I bought the software since if it didn’t work I could return it for my money back and decided to write this review to help any of you who are in the same position I was, wondering if their Windows PCTV television download software really works.  So here is my review… but be warned,  I’ll be going into both the good and the bad points.

So I went to SatelliteDirect.com and downloaded their software, knowing that they offered a 100% money back guarantee.  It took a few minutes to buy and download the software.  Once installed, I had to register the software and let it download the TV channels into the software program.  After coming back from my short meal break, I checked out all of the channels.  It had taken about 10 minutes for the program to load the channels.  Fortunately, after the initial installation, I never had to wait that long again.  The software program does update the TV channels regularly but after the initial installation, the updates only take a minute or two.

Could I get the major U.S. TV networks?  That was my first question.  That part was easy – all of the major networks were easily available and from many major cities.  So I bookmarked them using SatelliteDirect’s “Favorites” button.  CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, TNT, AMC, etc. – all bookmarked.  Then I tried viewing news.  I could watch local news from 20+ cities and nationwide news as well.  So that too was easy.  So far so good, although some of the TV channels said they were “off-air.”  It was midnight, so I just moved onto the next TV channels, bookmarking those that I liked and could get.  Click here for a list of channels.

What about sports?  First I clicked on the “Switch TV” toolbar button and, using the “Search” toolbar button (see screenshot below), I then searched for “sports.”  If you love sports then the results will make you drool.  All major sports (football, baseball, soccer, golf, tennis, etc.) and sports channels (ESPN for example) appear in the list, including sports channels from countries abroad like Brazil, U.K., Canada, Australia, China, Italy, India and the list goes on (click here for complete list of countries).  Then I noticed, in addition to those TV channels appearing under the “TV” section there was an additional section titled “Live Sports.”  Even more sports?!  Depending upon the time of day and what part of the globe you are on, the list of live sports changes.  That day it included all of the major sports plus some less popular sports such as poker, and table tennis.  Okay then, so SatelliteDirect’s television download includes a lot of sport TV channels.  Next…

Radio too.  Also on the toolbar was a radio button.  Just for fun I tested it out, knowing I would probably use iTunes radio or Pandora instead. The list was impressive, but I was more interested in TV so in search of movies I went.

Free online movies?  That’s what I really like, free online movies.  So I wanted to know if, just like with my old cable TV, I could find the same movie channels such as AMC and TNT.  Yup, they were there so I quickly bookmarked all of those channels too.  Here’s a tip – use the “SEARCH” toolbar button and type in “movie” to pull up all of the movie channels.  Over a hundred movie channels appeared in the left pane’s list.  Cool!

Okay, so to recap…

Downsides:

1) One downside is that the software takes one full minute to open, but the upside is that it is because it is updating its list of TV channels.

2) Another downside… occasionally an ad pops up before the TV channel appears so you have to click on the “X” in the top right corner of the ad to close it.  At first (initially) this is bothersome but once you realize the ad can be immediately closed by clicking on the “X” then you forget about it.

3) A third downside is that occasionally, especially at night, some of the selected channels are unavailable.  But with 3,500 channels from 99 countries I guess that is to be expected.  Bookmarking your favorite channels, those that are available when you want them, solves this problem… so I discovered.

Upsides:

1) Only $49.95 one-time fee!  Need I say more, at least that’s what I thought to myself.  No more monthly fees - not having to pay monthly for television – is very liberating.

2) I could watch it full screen on my large screen TV.  I just connected my laptop via an HDMI cable to my TV and presto, full screen!

3) Great technical support.  I asked them about how to find sports channels and I actually got a reply via email the next day.

So there you have it.  That’s my review.  SatelliteDirect is a quality product with responsive technical support at an unbeatable price.  I knew I could find some of the online TV channels on various websites but what a hassle that would be bookmarking all of those websites.  I started to do that and they were full of ads, had poor sound and video quality so I quickly searched for a better solution.  That’s what led me to SatelliteDirect… they compile all of the Internet TV stations from the U.S. and 98 other countries in an easy-to-use software program that works on Mac or PC computers.  If you have any questions let me know.  As I get questions, I post the answers on my FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page here.

Internet TV on the Rise

Internet TV on the Rise

“ ’30% of homes have Internet connected TV,’ reports Leichtman Research Group, Inc. (as stated by technology author Christopher Rick on reelseo.com).” Windows TV, otherwise known as Windows PCTV or Windows TV, is the new revolution.

“Nielsen data shows that consumers’ time with TV, Internet and Mobilevideo continues to increase across the board. Online video grew 13% in Q1 2009, driven by both strong brand marketing and large media events including the Presidential inauguration, the Super Bowl and March Madness. With broadband levels increasing in the U.S., online video audiences will continue to grow as consumers begin to upgrade their PCs to support increased video consumption. Mobile video viewing has grown a significant 52% from the previous year, up to 13.4 million Americans. Much of this growth continues to come from increased mobile content and the rise of the mobile web as a viewing option.” (As sited on Wikipedia.org who references “Briefing: Nielsen to Purchase All NetRatings Shares (International Herald Tribune. 2007-02-05).”.

“For the first time in 20 years, the number of homes in the United States with television sets has dropped,” states NYTimes author Brian Stelter in a NYTimes article titled “Ownership Of TV Sets Falls in U.S” (printed May 3, 2011). He continues “The Nielsen Company, which takes TV set ownership into account when it produces ratings, will tell television networks and advertisers on Tuesday that 96.7 percent of American households now own sets, down from 98.9 percent previously.”

“There are two reasons for the decline, according to Nielsen. One is poverty: some low-income households no longer own TV sets, most likely because they cannot afford new digital sets and antennas. The other is technological wizardry: young people who have grown up with laptops in their hands instead of remote controls are opting not to buy TV sets when they graduate from college or enter the work force, at least not at first. Instead, they are subsisting on a diet of television shows and movies from the Internet.”

“ ‘One thing we are seeing in the Nielsen sample are fewer people owning TVs,’ Ms. McDonough (of Nielsen) said.”

“Then there are the tech-savvy Americans who once lived in a household with a television, but no longer do. These are either cord-cutters — a term that refers to people who stop paying for cable television — or people who never signed on for cable. Ms. McDonough suggested that these were younger Americans who were moving into new residences and deciding not to buy a TV for themselves, especially if they ‘don’t have the financial means to get one immediately.’ “

“Sensitive to its clients’ concerns, Nielsen explains the trend this way in the report: ‘While Nielsen data demonstrates that consumers are viewing more video content across all platforms — rather than replacing one medium with another — a small subset of younger, urban consumers seem to be going without paid TV subscriptions for the time being. The long-term effects of this are still unclear, as it is undetermined if this is also an economic issue that will see these individuals entering the TV marketplace once they have the means, or the beginning of a larger shift to online viewing.’ “

What is Windows PCTV?

What is Windows PCTV?

Windows PCTV

What is Windows PCTV? It is often used to refer to the use of your MacIntosh or Windows PC as a TV. For example, SatelliteDirect.com , advertises the use of your computer along with their software (a one-time purchase, no monthly fees) to get “over 3,500 channels” including sports, movies, news, TV shows, and more from the U.S. and 98 other countries.

They advertise having the same or better video and audio quality without any hardware installation such as tuner cards, satellite dishes, or cable modems, and no monthly fees as both cable and satellite TV require. And with more channels, “over 3,500 channels.” So, as a result, they say Windows PCTV is better than cable or satellite TV; the online satellite internet pc tv turns your Windows PC into a TV. No other hardware or tv tuner required. Works with Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Mac.

Satellite TV And Internet

Satellite TV And Internet

Satellite TV And Internet Windows PCTV

Many service providers offer both satellite TV and internet for their customers; many companies offer a discount to their customers which purchase both services together.  If a person already had satellite television would have an easy time upgrading their internet to satellite DSL service, because the customer would already have most of the necessary equipment.

Satellite TV and internet packages often offer value to the customer because, by combining their services, often also with cellular phones or “land line” type phones, the companies themselves are able to offer lower prices to customers who purchase more than one of the available services together.  Besides the price, convenience is found in having many services all billed from one company, charges appearing on one bill, and the bill for all services being due at one time.

Satellite TV and internet packages are ideal for technology loving and technology challenged alike; many services offer easy to use and follow basic instructions and equipment, also have many customizable features for more technologically savvy.  The internet available through satellite providers will be much quicker than dial-up modem service, because it is DSL, which is a service much like cable internet service using an always on internet connection delivered through a modem.

The satellite TV and internet providers will often offer comparable or even less expensive prices than their cable television providing competitors; besides offering discounts for purchasing services together, the satellite and internet can be available in different service levels depending on the customer’s specific needs.

If a person needs very fast internet and wants all the movie channels in addition to the basic and extended programming, the company can offer these at reasonable rates.
Additionally if the other extreme were required, basic internet and satellite television service could also be provided at a less expensive price than could be found through another type of provider such as cable companies or telephone companies.

Purchasing satellite television and internet together is also a great option for people who may not be able to find these types of premium entertainment options in their area.  Satellite television and internet services are often available in many more areas than cable or even telephone services are; people can even enjoy these luxuries when traveling or camping.

Of all the technological advances which entertain the American people, among the most enjoyed are satellite television and internet; with these people are able to keep connected, get up to date or unwind from a stressful time.  Television and internet using, for example, Windows PCTV, have changed the way people connect to each other and disconnect from their day; finding these pastimes at a reasonable price can make them much more enjoyable.

Basic Satellite TV Equipment

Basic Satellite TV Equipment

Basic Satellite TV Equipment by Windows PCTV

Compared to the complexity of creating and producing television programming, the sci-fi sounding prospect of transmitting them over satellite TV equipment is much simpler. After all, every type of television program presents its own type of problem while all satellite television is pretty much alike. Once the satellite itself is orbiting the earth, there’s nothing to it.

Up, Up And Right Here

The very difficult process of selecting the channels that will be included in the subscription package is usually the hard part. The programming people who create the content for those channels all do the same thing. They use an uplink to encrypt, compress and send the programming to the appropriate satellite. This process is the same for taped dramas as for live sports.

The satellite uses a downlink to send the programming back down to earth. On its way to earth, the signal is captured by satellite dishes which decrypt the channels that are contained in the customer’s subscription package. This step involves pretty basic satellite TV equipment. Your neighbors will have dishes and hookups very similar to yours no matter what subscription package they have. The signal moves from the dish to the TV by way of special cable. Speaking of cable, subscribers to cable TV get their signal the same way. The same kind of satellite TV equipment picks up the download from space, decrypts it and sends it to the cable station. The station sends the signal for the customer’s subscription package by way of cable to the customer’s home TV.

The difference between cable and satellite TV equipment is obvious. The cable customer receives his programming from the big satellite dishes at the cable TV company while the satellite customer has his own dish. Today’s satellite TV equipment only allows a single channel to come into the home at one time. The channel can be viewed by more than one television set at one time, but if the family wants to view two different programs at once, then two satellite dishes are needed.

The signal that arrives from the cable company can be split to allow each TV to view a different channel or any number can view the same one. Viewers believe that satellite TV equipment can fall victim to signal obstruction and they’re right. However, obstructions caused by weather can affect the signal going to the cable customers just as easily. No matter what kind of satellite TV equipment you have, the choices and options are huge.
